The United States could use someone like St. Margaret to restore "civility and ceremony to a collection of rough and coarse nobles. Manners, purity and devotion demonstrated by Margaret were emulated by the Scottish lords and ladies and established a more refined and cultured reputation for the court". It is important to note she led by example, thank you Pastor John for your leading by word and example!

Pastor, I only wish I could embody the traits the Venerable Bede attributes to Aidan. We are called to love God and love our neighbor, Aidan lived it. Fortunately, we have some modern day hero's that exihibit these qualities, Fred Rogers was one and Bishop Kolini is one. Thank you for sharing, I look forward to your next offering.

I was just thinking how many of us tend to approach others while on our own horse? Not a literal horse -- but our own "high horse". I think I want to take St. Aidan's example to heart and not approach others from my own "high horse".

Comment on A Lenten Journey by Lydia

Although the season of Advent is the official beginning of the Christian calendar year, I often feel the season of Lent is the time of "new beginnings" for me, personally. Since the term "Lent", comes from a Teutonic word for "spring", it is a simple leap in my mind to a time for clearing out, cleaning up, rearranging and organizing the clutter of my spiritual house. I never make New Year's resolutions - I reserve those commitments to improve and strengthen my life for the more appropriate and meaningful season of Lent.

Like most people, I find this time of introspection and evaluation somewhat difficult. No one ever looks forward to cleaning out the garage - sorting through the accumulated "baggage" of perhaps years - determining the true worth of the trinkets collected, souvenirs from bygone vacations, white-elephant gift exchanges, those clothes I could wear again if I could just lose a few pounds... valuable stuff, to be sure! They connect us to memories and people and sometimes they are the very things that drag us down and prevent us from having that extra space we really need for something more useful - like a treadmill, maybe...

Spiritual "spring cleaning" is even more important. Bad habits, anger, unforgiveness, cynicism, selfishness, complacency, allowing the "busyness" of life interfere with our relationship with God... Lent is the perfect opportunity to sweep away this garbage and make room for love, forgiveness, faith, prayer, service, in short - giving God His proper place in our life, becoming more Christ-like in thought, word and deed through sacrifice of self-indulgence.

For me, Lent is not so much about giving something up, but in taking something on. Perhaps there's a project you have been putting off - like cleaning out the garage. Making space in our lives to focus on others, to give more of ourselves by taking on the burden of purposeful, directed prayer for our "most wanted" will help us to become more connected with those we love and in turn will draw us closer to Christ by partaking of the sacrifice of prayer.
